Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a client-centered counseling method designed to help people resolve ambivalence about making changes in their lives. Instead of pushing or persuading, MI draws out your own motivations, values, and reasons for change. This respectful and empowering approach is especially effective for individuals who are uncertain about recovery or who have experienced setbacks in the past.
At R&R Health, we use MI to create a collaborative partnership between client and therapist. We recognize that lasting change is more likely when it comes from your own decision rather than external pressure. Our role is to guide the conversation, ask the right questions, and help you uncover the personal goals that inspire you to move forward.
Change can be difficult, even when we know it is necessary. Many people have mixed feelings about leaving old habits behind, especially when those habits once offered comfort or relief. MI works by acknowledging that ambivalence is a normal part of the process, then using structured conversation to explore both sides of the conflict until the path forward becomes clear.
Expressing Empathy
We listen without judgment, validating your experiences and emotions so you feel understood and respected.
Developing Discrepancy
By exploring the gap between where you are now and where you want to be, you can see how current behaviors may be holding you back from your values and goals.
Rolling with Resistance
We do not confront resistance head-on. Instead, we accept it as part of the process and work with you to address underlying concerns in a supportive way.
Supporting Self-Efficacy
We help you recognize your strengths and past successes so you can believe in your ability to create change again.
Our goal is for clients to leave CBT with a clear understanding of how their thoughts shape their lives and the ability to choose thoughts and behaviors that align with their values. This shift empowers clients to manage challenges with confidence and maintain stability long after treatment ends.
You do not have to face this alone. Whether you are seeking help for yourself or a loved one, our admissions team will guide you every step of the way.
